Formed in 2013, the Petrucci String Quartet is a Boston-based string quartet dedicated to the study of great classical and contemporary works. Its members-Robert Anemone and Li-Mei Liang, violins, Shira Majoni, viola, and Joseph Gotoff, cellist-share a passion for the quartets of Beethoven, and are the recipients of a grant to transcribe the manuscripts of Beethoven's Op. 130 and Grosse Fugue, obtained from libraries all over the world. Working under the guidance of Nicholas Kitchen, first violinist of the acclaimed Borromeo String Quartet, we have been exploring and analyzing these documents, discovering musical elements both obvious and minute that are missing from published editions of the works. Our hope is to produce a transcription that is faithful to Beethoven's hand, with special attention paid to variations in dynamics, articulations, and other expressive markings, as well as the notes that have never been published: deleted or revised material that reveals Beethoven's remarkable editing process. We aim to create an open-share document that will feature the manuscript overlaid with our edition in a format that is useable for study and performance alike.
